What makes a nursing home a home? What needs to
happen to make that a reality? In recent years, more long-term care facilities across
America have provided those answers through a culture change movement. This
movement promotes the implementation of changes such as person-centered care
and empowerment of residents and staff working together.
Nursing home administrators play a crucial role
in culture change by promoting strategies to overcome barriers that prevent new
and better practices. Culture change research identifying barriers 64
administrators faced and strategies they used was done through in-depth individual interviews. Not surprisingly, results
showed that key barriers to culture change included staff, residents, and
family members resistant to change. Administrators stressed the importance of
including all stakeholders in ongoing and reciprocal communication, education,
and training to overcome this resistance.
